Being the second largest opera house, the Volksoper enjoys a very special reputation for cultivating and conveying the (Viennese) operetta, since more than 100 performances are dedicated to this genre. However, the opera repertoire of the 18th, 19th and 20th century, as well as classical musical, contemporary dance and concerts with the Volksopernorchester play an important role in the theatre’s programming.
The theatre with a capacity of 1,400 seats offers around 300 performances per season.
Since 1955, the directors Franz Salmhofer, Albert Moser, Karl Dönch, Eberhard Waechter, Ioan Holender and Klaus Bachler, Dominique Mentha and Rudolf Berger as well as the present Artistic Director, Robert Meyer, have set the tone of the Volksoper. |
